A few days after leaving port in Zhuhai we picked up lunchtime stories from the crew onboard the good ship CV29. Every lunch time one person gets assigned to entertain the team in some way. On St Patrick’s day there was a limerick competition that Brent, one of the new joiners on this leg won by the applause meter.

The bags of sweets that the first prize resulted in was shared in good team spirit. When it was my turn, I decided to write a song that would involve everyone to song along in the lyrics. Failing to deliver on my first day, since the song had only a beginning and no chorus, I had to ask for the opportunity to finalise it. Thankfully the team has a forgiving spirit, and I didn’t have to walk the plank just yet.

I sat round the kitchen table,

with my folks just the other day,

sharing some thoughts about my going away.

You know like, keeping in touch with, and seeing my kids,

watering my flowers and defrosting the fridge,

while I’m off to see the Mi-ttie team.

I flew out to southern China, to meet up with the crew,

some to me were new but some I knew,

They’ve been sailing from England to Uruguay,

South Africa and Australia around to Vietnam before they here arrived.

We spent a week of fixing things, having some fun and do some prepping

before we set out to start race nine.

The first days were tough, the sea was rough, some got sick but we stuck it through.

We’re on our way from Zhuhai to Qingdao.

We’ve past the southern tip of the island of Taiwan,

chasing up the leaders in the pack.

Time to get on cracking, upwind race means tacking

see you all in port when you arrive.

// Go flipping faster, go flipping faster

Oh Mi-ttie team

Now we are on our final stretch up the East China Sea avoiding fishing pots, fishing boats and dealing with sailing in thick fog for the next couple of days of 45 degree angle life before the next stopover in Qingdao.
