This is a tough gig

Week one was a rude awakening for us all with the extreme heat and humidity. It was reminiscent of a Bikram yoga class 24x7 perspiring on every inch of your body. Most of us could barely consume enough water and/or electrolytes to keep adequately hydrated. We would wake up perspiring and then head up on deck to feel the hot sting from the sun all day. It was tough racing and sleeping in these conditions.

This week, nature threw in a threatening water spout, and big gusts of wind; and with it came heavy rain. After dropping the Yankee, all the crew came out on deck, some with shower gel in hand, to enjoy the fresh water and get temporary relief from the heat and humidity. It was brilliant – laughter and smiles all around.

We are on a two-watch system - three x 4 hours during the day then two x 6 hours watches so we can get relief from the heat in the day and sleep during the night. Well, that’s the theory but haven’t managed to sleep that well yet especially as the boat has been heeled over at 40 degrees and my bunk side fan gives little respite.

Today made my day when a large pod of dolphins were jumping in and out of the water right beside the boat. I couldn’t take my eyes off them. Later that evening after sunset another pod appeared again. Listening to them breathe and water splash every time they surfed the wave, and seeing streaks of light from their underbelly was an amazing experience.

We are a crew of 19 including skipper and AQP and are in good spirits.

PS: A big hello and hugs to Michael, family, and friends following the race.
