As part of the victualling team since we left the UK in September, we have done well with only lemon and ginger tea running out on Leg 1 and hot chocolate on Leg 3. We have studied the use of ingredients and cleaning materials on a leg-by-leg basis and altered stocks accordingly.

Well, Leg 6 had been a bit of a surprise, we are using more than 1.75 loo rolls per person per week the run rate we forecasted. The 1.75 per person per week was the highest run rate, lowest was less than 1 loo roll per person per week. We are now 12 days out with only enough loo rolls for 8 based on today’s calculations. The crew have been told and to be careful and only use loo roll as it’s designed.

The old fashioned towrag may have to be deployed (a rag dragged behind the ship to be re used in the heads!). Plans are afoot, kitchen roll as ‘back up’, wet wipe trading from worlders who have stocks to other crew members.

Gas is also being rationed a little to ensure that we have warm food until Seattle, hot water bottles are stopped and hot drinks are limited to one per watch. Soon we will be back out of the damp, cold grey miserable conditions of the North Pacific, not a place to come back to!
