Qingdao Skipper update

07 November 2023

Due to an ongoing medical condition, Greg Hunt is not currently able to return to be the Skipper of Qingdao. Jeronimo Santos Gonzalez will be taking over as the Qingdao Skipper on Leg 3, from Cape Town to Fremantle and will continue on Leg 4 until Airlie Beach. He will be supported by Steve Westwood as AQP.

Jeronimo was the Race Skipper of Punta del Este on the Clipper 2019-20 Race, with his team coming in second place overall. He is a very accomplished sailor and instructor. Since completing his circumnavigation with us, he has been racing in Asia, competed on a leg of the Globe 40, took part in the Rolex Fastnet Race earlier this year, been a Clipper Race Training Skipper for the current edition and is at present teaching and racing in Sydney.

Jeronimo will arrive in Cape Town on 11 November and is looking forward to meeting the team, carrying out Leg 3 team training and preparing for the race ahead.

The Clipper Race team wishes Greg well with his recovery at home in South Africa. We welcome Jeronimo back to the Clipper Race and look forward to him joining the team later this week. We also thank Dale Smyth for stepping in to be the Qingdao Race Skipper on Leg 2 – it looks like it's been a very competitive race for the team and we look forward to seeing its result into Cape Town.
