Hello Qingers,

After getting some well-earned rest thanks to the slightly more civilised conditions going up the coast of Taiwan, we’re back to living at 45 degrees beating upwind. When first these conditions hit, we sailed too close to some disputed islands between Japan and China (Diaoyutai Archipelago), along with some of the other Clipper Race boats, we were told to adjust course and keep clear while we had a flyby of a Chinese Navy vessel chasing a Japanese vessel, both constantly telling the other to get out of their waters. Since then, the only navy fleet we’ve seen has been the endless fishing navy whom we are constantly avoiding.

Before sailing in the China Sea, I would always try to keep two miles away from other traffic, when on an ocean crossing, now – thanks to the endless fishing vessels in these waters, I’m more than happy if I get 500 metres.

There’s not much more upwind to deal with than one small wind hole and we’re on the home run downwind. It should be a great way to finish! We’re all very excited to get into Qingdao!

Love to those at home,

Henry, Phil, and the dragon riders
