“I have never sailed before and have no sailing knowledge at all,” reveals Australian Kim Votano.

Kim, 53 has signed up for Leg 4 of the ninth edition of the Clipper Race which will challenge the crews taking part with the tough Southern Ocean.

“I heard about the race from my daughter while she was thinking of participating and showed me the website. I was looking for a challenge and this seemed like the way to go.

“I have completed Level 1 training and was happy and relieved that I have made the right decision to take part in the race,” continues Kim.

“I was concerned before training about being cold, living conditions on board and being a valuable crew member with enough fitness to complete the leg.  Training helped to alleviate my concerns and reassured me that I will be able to participate and enjoy the whole experience, even though I still have a great deal to learn about sailing.

During the Clipper 13-14 Race over 650 crew members representing over 40 different nationalities will take part with around forty per cent having no sailing experience before their Level 1 training.

“I’ve met so many amazing people and learning a totally new skill set, the training is extremely intense and rewarding.”
