The helicopter arranged through French authorities has successfully picked up Andrew and is on its way to a hospital in Brest, France.

The Clipper Race would like to thank all authorities who helped with swiftly arranging medical support this morning and also thank Skipper Philip, First Mate Faith and the crew of Qingdao for their coordination efforts and support.

Everyone at the Clipper Race sends best wishes and a speedy recovery to Andrew.

A crew member on board Team Qingdao, Andrew Smith, has sustained an injury while on board, and therefore the yacht needs to be diverted. Andrew’s primary contact has been informed.

Skipper Philip Quinn has been in constant contact with the Race Management Team and MSOS – our telemed provider and we have been working to MSOS’ recommendations.

Deputy Race Director Max Rivers has been liaising with the relevant French authorities who have recommended a helicopter pick-up of Andrew, which is now en route.
