NEW SKIPPER FOR TEAM GARMIN

Veteran ocean racing Skipper Jan Ridd (50), from Weymouth, Dorset, UK, is to take over the helm on Team Garmin in Singapore for the remainder of the 2013-14 edition of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.

Ridd is a seasoned sailor and a long term Clipper Race training skipper who also lead a team around the world in the 2009-10 edition of the race taking Cape Breton – Nova Scotia’s Masterpiece to a podium finish in third place overall. Late last year he skippered the delivery of a Clipper 68 from the UK to Australia, where it is now based at the company’s new training base in Sydney.

“I’m really looking forward to taking up the role of Skipper aboard Team Garmin,” said Jan Ridd. “From what I’ve heard they’re a very determined crew and I look forward to working with them. Racing from Singapore back to the UK aboard one of the new Clipper 70s is also a very exciting prospect.”

Ridd replaces current Skipper Mark Burkes who took over at relatively short notice late last year and has had to step down due to unforeseen personal commitments.

Jan Ridd will fly out to Singapore to join his crew next week, after sorting out Visas, for Race 9 to Qingdao in China which starts on Wednesday 19 February 2014.
