The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is renowned as one of the toughest endurance challenges on the planet, and as a result, it needs technology to match. For the second consecutive race edition, Dell, our Rugged Technology Partner, will be providing Latitude Rugged Extreme laptops to assist the world’s largest matched fleet as it battles epic conditions during the 40,000 nautical mile, eleven month race around the globe.
Dell will take its product testing lab into the field by outfitting each Skipper with a Dell Latitude 7212 Rugged Extreme Tablet. The tablet, made of magnesium alloy and high impact durable thermoplastic, has been built to a United States Military Standard, meaning it is impervious to a range of environmental conditions, including high and low temperatures, exposure, rain, salt, shocks and drops, while the touch screen is glove friendly and visible in the brightest sunlight.
The mobility of being able to use the tablet anywhere above deck, combined with the ruggedness allowing it to function in the harshest conditions on deck, will lay the foundation for even more competitive and close-quarter racing.
Two of the newly launched Dell Latitude 7424 Rugged Extreme Laptops will also be allocated to each yacht. One will be used for communications and sending back the images and videos which will be used by media outlets around the world, while the other will power all the crucial navigation equipment and weather information. Again, the rugged features will protect the technology when life at an angle gets tough and will protect against the salt water and damp that comes with life at sea. This is crucial to keep the yachts connected with the world on land and also power the navigational software.
