ABOUT THE HOST PORT
Laying on the southern tip of Hainan Island, the upscale tropical paradise of Sanya will be the first of three Chinese Host Ports on the Clipper 2019-20 Race route.
Boasting over 25km of picture-perfect sandy beaches lined with coconut palms, pristine sparkling blue waters and a balmy climate with 300 days of sunshine per year, China’s idyllic holiday destination is sharply on the rise, living up to its reputation as the ‘Hawaii of China’.
The culturally rich resort, which was the only Chinese destination to be selected as one of the 52 places to visit by the New York Times, offers a warm welcome to visitors and offers something for everyone; watersports enthusiasts flock to sail and surf on the South China Sea, adventurers can explore the lush Rainforest and foodies can sample Sanya’s local delicacies which includes seafood hotpot, Li five-coloured rice, Hui sour fish soup, Li Shanlan liquor and fresh coconut water.
Sanya’s rich heritage, which dates back thousands of years, will impress visitors wanting to immerse themselves in local history. Must-see attractions include the iconic statue of Guanyin in Nanshan Temple which stands at 108 meters tall, Tianya Haijiao (The End of the Earth), Daxiaodongtian (Dongtian Park), Luhuitou Park, and Wuzhizhou Island.
Modern landmarks include Phoenix Island, dubbed Oriental Dubai, which is an artificial archipelago in Sanya’s bustling city centre. After watching the sunset on Sanya Bay beach, Phoenix Island comes to life with a spectacular light show on its five iconic buildings.
The Clipper Race fleet is returning to Sanya’s Serenity Marina, which is a hub of marine activity regularly hosting major regattas including the Round Hainan Regatta, after making its debut visit during Leg 5 of the 2017-18 edition. Serenity Marina, which is the only Chinese marina to have been awarded the highest Global Gold Anchor award, Platinum Level 5 Gold Anchor accreditation, has an impressive host of facilities including a dedicated hotel, sailing school, marina club house, race offices and direct access to South China Sea.
