Roles

On the Clipper Race, everyone’s expected to pull their weight – no matter their previous experience. You’ll be part of a fully trained unit, able to respond and take charge whatever the situation demands.    

During the race you’ll be able to get involved with all the key roles on deck – as helm, mast, pit, bow and grinder. You’ll also be able to specialise in the areas matching your strengths and previous experience.

Bosun

Assists the Skipper with maintenance and servicing of deck equipment, including rigging, winches, sheets and ropes.

Maintaining Electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems on board

Engineer

Under guidance of the Skipper, the Engineer maintains the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems on board.

Plans nutritious, calorie-rich meals for the whole crew, and ensures that food, water and supplies stores are kept well-stocked.

Victualler

Plans nutritious, calorie-rich meals for the whole crew, and ensures that food, water and supplies stores are kept well-stocked.

As the name suggests, the Sailmaker is responsible for the upkeep and repair of the yacht’s sails.

Medical Assistant

While the Skipper and First Mate are ultimately responsible for the safety of all on board, the Medical Assistant plays a vital supportive role in First Aid and care.

Stopover Manager

Working with the Skipper, the Stopover Manager plans rest, recuperation and repair in ports along the race route.

Team Coordinator

Aids the Skipper with administration and organisation – including compiling paperwork for customs and immigration at each port.

Social Treasurer

Helps manage the crew fund and plans activities with family and friends at stopover ports.

Media Crew

Works with the Clipper Race Communications Team to produce content from the yacht, including photos, videos and blogs.
