Airlie Beach, Australia - Subic Bay, Philippines

Stage 6: London Business School's Tropical Trade Winds

Key features: Tropical trades, coastal islands, sprint racing

Stage 6: London Business School's Tropical Trade Winds takes Race Crew from Airlie Beach, Australia to Subic Bay, Philippines. This is a lively offshore and coastal leg where speed, precision and teamwork combine. After leaving the Whitsundays behind, teams will power north under the tropical trades, threading their way through island‑strewn seas and shifting winds.

As the fleet approaches the Philippines, the stage shifts gear: tighter navigation, local squalls and a sprint finish into Subic Bay await. It’s a stage that rewards tactical agility as much as pace, before crews arrive in the palm‑lined harbour of Subic Bay and enjoy the welcome.

Sailing Update

London Business School

London Business School suffered damage to its boom during a routine manoeuvre. This has led to the team dropping its mainsail and boom to the deck of the vessel whilst a thorough inspection of the boom and rigging is undertaken. All crew are well on board and the team is still currently racing, making good speed towards Subic Bay. Under the guidance from the Race Maintenance Department, Skipper Gavin Rees is running through a comprehensive check list of the boat’s rig and rigging. It is unlikely that the team will be able to rehoist its mainsail at this time. The Maintenance Team both in the UK and those already in Subic Bay have started formulating a plan for the repair or replacement of the affected part of the vessel.

If any further updates are required we will share information on this page.

"As we’ve rounded the top of the Philippines we’ve also found ourselves positioned in some strong winds and 5 meter waves as we headed through the infamous Luzon straits. It’s been wet, wild and epic. We’re now on our southbound course towards Subic bay and heading directly towards cold beer and AC. Bring it on!"

Circumnavigators Reflect

Halfway round or halfway home?

As the fleet closes in on the Philippines on the sixth stage of the edition, at 147°E the circumnavigators on board officially passed the halfway mark – that’s 20,051nm sailed to be precise (or 418 million toilet rolls, thanks Team London Business School for the maths!)– and for the first time since Leg 1, the teams are back in the Northern Hemisphere. We asked our round-the-worlders to reflect on what life at sea has taught them so far and what the next six months have in store as they sail into the second half of their round the world challenge.
