Biography

31-year-old Josh Stickland from Southampton, UK, brings a wealth of sailing experience and over 100,000 nautical miles to his role as Clipper 2019-20 Round the World Yacht Race Skipper.

First taking to the water aged 10, it was after leaving school that Josh was able, with help from the Prince’s Trust, to qualify as a Watersports Instructor and he has never looked back. After a stint of instructing on dinghies, Josh knew that a career in sailing was his calling and he soon completed his professional yachting qualifications.

Since then, Josh’s sailing career has taken him all over the globe where he has worked on yachts and superyachts up to 110m in length but for Josh, leading a non-professional team in the Clipper Race will be his career highlight.

On being appointed as Clipper Race Skipper, Josh said: “It has been a long time coming! I have wanted to be a Clipper Race Skipper since I completed my RYA Yachtmaster qualifications when I was 22. Before then I didn't even know it could be a job, but when I found out it was a job I wanted to do it and have been working to get to this point.”

Josh is a familiar face at Clipper Race HQ having previously worked as a Training Mate and, having most recently worked as part of the refit team, meaning he has an in-depth knowledge of the Clipper 70 fleet.

On how he’s feeling ahead of his new challenge, Josh adds: “I’m very excited to be a Clipper Race Skipper but I am most excited about meeting my team and getting on board.”

In addition to his Clipper Race yacht knowledge, thanks to a previous job as Skipper of a private sailing yacht in Asia, Josh already has lots of experience in navigating vast fishing fleets. This is surely a skill which will come in handy when the race approaches the halfway mark of the circumnavigation.

When Josh isn't sailing, you will find him making the most of the waves with his homemade surfboard, playing football, and learning to play the ukulele.
